A powerful winter storm is expected to hit the Chicago area late Tuesday through Thursday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Cook County and surrounding areas, forecasting 6 to 10 inches of total snowfall, with potentially higher amounts in the southwest suburbs. The heaviest snow is predicted to fall on Wednesday, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts up to 50 mph creating blizzard-like conditions and significantly reducing visibility. Travel is expected to become extremely hazardous, with potential whiteout conditions and significant drifting.

The storm will be followed by a deep Arctic air mass, causing temperatures to plummet to single digits on Wednesday night and Thursday, with wind chills making it feel like -15 to -25 degrees Fahrenheit. City officials are urging residents to limit travel during the storm’s peak and prepare for potential power outages. The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation is mobilizing its full fleet of snowplows and salt spreaders to prioritize main roads and Lake Shore Drive.

Public transportation may experience delays and cancellations; commuters should check with the CTA and Metra for updates. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency recommends having a winter emergency kit with essentials like food, water, and a battery-powered radio. Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors and ensure they have adequate shelter.

The National Weather Service warns of potential lake-effect snow downwind of Lake Michigan, which could add to snowfall totals in some areas. Chicagoans are advised to stay informed, exercise caution, and heed warnings from authorities throughout the storm. The storm is expected to move out by Thursday evening, but bitterly cold temperatures will linger into the weekend, posing a risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
