A powerful winter storm is expected to hit Minnesota tonight through Thursday, prompting KSTP meteorologists to warn of hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for central and southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro area, due to anticipated heavy snowfall and strong winds.

KSTP’s weather team is tracking a storm system developing over the Plains that will rapidly intensify as it moves northeast. The system is expected to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow, with higher amounts possible, particularly south of the metro area. The heaviest snowfall is expected on Wednesday, with rates potentially exceeding 1-2 inches per hour.

Strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 40-50 mph will create blizzard-like conditions, reducing visibility and causing widespread blowing and drifting snow. This combination of snow and wind will make travel extremely difficult, and KSTP advises viewers to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is pre-treating roadways, but the intensity of the snowfall and wind may overwhelm these efforts. The KSTP 5 Weather app is providing real-time radar updates, school closings, and power outage information as the storm approaches.

Temperatures will drop significantly, with highs on Wednesday struggling to reach the 20s and overnight lows dipping into single digits. Following the storm’s passage on Thursday, lake-effect snow is possible downwind of the Great Lakes.

KSTP will provide live updates on air and online, focusing on the impact to commuters, schools, and critical infrastructure. The forecast indicates a prolonged period of cold temperatures following the storm, with below-average conditions expected to persist through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Residents are advised to prepare for potentially icy conditions and take precautions to protect pipes and pets from the cold. KSTP recommends having a winter emergency kit, including warm clothing, food, water, and a flashlight, and staying informed through reliable sources.
