A shooting marred the One Musicfest hip-hop festival in Houston, Texas, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, injuring at least nine people. The incident occurred around 11:05 PM near 8th Street and Washington Avenue, a popular entertainment district, prompting a swift response from the Houston Police Department (HPD).

Upon arrival, officers found a chaotic scene with attendees fleeing the area. The victims, who sustained gunshot wounds of varying severity, were taken to local hospitals, including Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Initially, two victims were reported to be in critical condition, but authorities later confirmed their condition had stabilized.

The shooter, 32-year-old Mohammad Nassar, was apprehended shortly after attempting to flee. Witnesses and security personnel reportedly subdued him before police arrived. Nassar was found to be armed with a handgun and multiple magazines.

Early investigations suggest the shooting was not a random act, but rather stemmed from a dispute related to a past relationship. Evidence indicates Nassar targeted a specific woman at the concert. HPD Chief Troy Finner praised the bravery of those who intervened to stop the shooter during a press conference on Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing, with detectives reviewing security footage, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing ballistics evidence. One Musicfest organizers halted the concert and cooperated fully with law enforcement, expressing sorrow for the victims and gratitude for the HPD’s prompt response.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has announced Nassar will face multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with potential additional charges pending further investigation. The incident has raised concerns about gun violence and security measures at large public gatherings, prompting city officials to review protocols for future events. The HPD continues to urge anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation.
